Events & Experiences

Athletics Day

Every year, Skipton Primary hosts an Athletics Day.

In the morning session, students compete in age groups in the field events at school, including:
– long jump
– high jump
– discus
– shotput

After the BBQ, students head to the Skipton Football Ground for the afternoon session and the track events. These include:
– 200m/150m
-100m/70m
– the relays

At the finish of the relays, the winning house is announced.

Breakfast Club

The school operates a student-managed Breakfast Club for all students. Currently, Breakfast Club is open every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning from 8:30am-9am.

Grade 5/6 volunteers provide cereal, cook the toast, prepare fruit and promote the Club every week.

Camps

Skipton Primary operates an extensive camping program throughout the school years.

The Foundation grade and Grade 1 have a late stay at school where children stay back and enjoy dinner and a movie.

Grade 2 have a sleep over at Mooramong Homestead, which is a National Trust property formerly belonging to Scobie and Claire Mackinnon.

Grades 3 and 4 go to Melbourne for three days to experience all that our state capital has to offer and then adventure camping on the other year.

Grades 5 and 6 have a two-year rotation where one year they go to Canberra and Sydney, and the other Tasmonia. Funding for this experience has been provided by The Mackinnon Trust, a bequest set up by Scobie and Claire Mackinnon specifically to support this ventures such as this.

Grandparents & Friends

Each year grandparents and special friends are invited to school. They get to spend time with their grandchildren and see what is happening in the classrooms.

Grandparents and friends come from all over Victoria, and our students just love it! Involvement from all generations in a child’s education has very positive effects.

Music Tuition

Kathleen Morris conducts one-on-one tuition for students in a range of musical endeavors. Sessions take place at the school. If you are interested, please call the school to organise this opportunity.

The lessons are covered during the week, generally during school time. This time is rotated so that students do not miss out on the same subject each week. About one quarter of our students have taken up this opportunity.

Young Leaders

Each year the school sends our Grade 5 and 6 students to a day in Melbourne called ‘National Young Leaders Day’. They have terrific speakers, along with entertainment, all designed to build an appreciation of leadership skills and knowledge needed for our up and coming generation. At Skipton we send all our 5/6 grade as we regard this time as ‘the leadership years.’

Swimming Program

The school delivers a two-week program on Swimming Safety. This program is taking place in late-November and December every school year. The program is delivered by school staff, with the support of parent volunteers.

Winter Sports

Each winter, students participate in a number of weekly sports sessions to develop their skills. The Winter Sports program offers students the opportunity to play AFL, netball or tee ball. It is a very enjoyable part of life here at Skipton Primary and it is always heartwarming to see Grade 5 and 6 students mentor and support younger students to improve their skills.
